We're having a bad week ...

Yeah, so this picture pretty much sums it up.

Daniel's mom has been in ICU on life support for the last 2 weeks. The doctors sent for his brother, Brian to come home from the Army in Iraq. It's feeling pretty grim around here.

Thursday, Daniel slammed int0 the back of a car on the 57 freeway and we just got the news that his car is totaled. So, he is working 4 jobs, I am at the Farmer's Market once a week, and I try and do hair when I can, and we now only have one car. I can't believe it. I am so glad that nobody was seriously injured. Still bummed and in shock. The car was in great condition and paid for. Now our insurance will go up and we can't even get another car, so we are praying for some kind of miracle.

Then, Saturday, I picked up Sonora and she was burning up ... first fever ever. We were scared to death and wondering if Daniel may have brought something home from visiting his mom in the hospital. She was steadily climbing and when she reached 103.1, we headed for the urgent care. She lost her appetite and we were trying our best to cool her down with wet washcloths all night and baby tylenol. We kept her from going into a seizure, but headed for our regular doctor on Monday. She did not have strep throat, just a viral throat infection and her body killed it off, thank the Lord.

Easter was melancholy, as much as we tried to rejoice in the Ressurrection, we were just tired, and a little depressed. Sonora's picture pretty much sums it up.

I know things will get better, they always do. I almost didn't even blog all of this, but it feels better to get it out.

Please, when you think of us, send up a prayer.

We appreciate it.

Love,
Ant~*

They said it would happen ...

Just wait until she ...

And the list goes on of all the things Sonora will do to us. So many parents who look at our sweet angel were waiting for the day that her halo would finally tilt. People would say it was too good to be true, that sooner or later she will turn out to be like every other kid and she would do things like uncontrollably scream in public, throw things or pee on Daniel, or blast poop out of her clothes all over her stroller or carseat or poop in the bathtub. Well, here we were, just a couple days short of her turning 5 months old, and so far, none of those things happened ... UNTIL YESTERDAY!

We woke up happy ... it was a normal day, like any other, our sweet miracle baby was happily cooing when we went in to get her. We fed her breakfast (it was the first day of trying prunes) and she loved it!

Daniel went to work and I decided to take her to Disneyland. I dressed her in a cute striped onsie, a pair of jeans and a lightweight hoodie that matched the onesie. She looked adorable, as usual.

We get on the tram, and she begins charming the crowd. Everyone was commenting on what a doll she is and she was flashing that famous toothless grin at everyone. I tried not to beam too brightly.

We get into the park and I was so excited, the band was playing by the fire station and I thought she would love it.

I thought wrong.

She began to fuss, so I looked at the time and realized it was time for her to eat. All of a sudden, just as we were making our way through the tunnel entrance on the right, she began crying. I hurried and sat at a bench at the bottom of the train station and got out her cereal. At first, it appeared to be just the ticket, but after about 6 spoonfuls, she burst into full on screaming! Oh my gosh, it was a major Main Street Melt Down! I was holding her in my lap, but had to put her in the stroller to put all the feeding stuff away and she got even worse. I asked myself if I should turn around and leave, or head for the baby center. Myself couldn't even hear the question through the screaming baby, and if Myself heard, I wouldn't have been able to hear myself answer. Now I was getting pity looks from passers by.

I decided to head down main street. I was carrying her in my arms and also pushing the vacant stroller at the same time. She was pulling my hair and screaming as if I had pulled out her toenails with pliers. Somehow, I managed to get in the door of the baby center.

Phew.

I took her into the nursing room and she immediately knew what we were there for and calmed down instantly. I thought, "wow ... she just wanted her mommy and she wanted to nurse ..." I was a little flattered, truth be told.

We were there for about 30 minutes, and she didn't fall asleep Instead, she was cheerful and raring to go. We left and I put her in the stroller and we headed for the castle. We met a man in a wheelchair named John, and she was smiling and cooing at him.

We walked through the castle and I thought it would be fun to take her on the Storybook Land ride. I parked the stroller and picked her up and felt a moist spot on my arm.

Oh no ... the diaper must have leaked. I put her back in the stroller and headed for the Fantasyland bathroom by Casey Jr.

NOTHING could have prepared me for what came next.

I laid Sonora on the changing pad and as I took off her jeans, I realized it wasn't just pee that had leaked. This girl, this angel of my dreams looked as if she had gotten herself into a mud fight and LOST! It was a full blown prune explosion!

She had pooped all up her back past her shoulder blades, which I did not feel through the sweatshirt. It has smushed up her front past her chest and out one sleeve! I was afraid to take off the diaper, and I was right. It was half mush, half liquid. And as for the smell, I won't even go there!

Now, there were other mothers saying to their children, "we'll go change you someplace else, honey." and "oh you poor little thing ..."
You don't want to know about the looks I was getting from the non-mothers.

There was no way to get this thing off her without pulling it over her face and head. I mopped up as much as I could, but she was wiggling and slippery. She can't sit up on her own yet, so usually I lean her against my tummy to change her and stuff, but that was not an option now. I grabbed a new bib and put it over her face and then as quick as I could, I slid the onesie over her head and yes, got poop in her hair! All this while trying to keep her from putting her hands in her mouth ... which if you have seen her lately, nothing can keep her hands out of her mouth!

I used up every wipe I owned. Frankly, the world didn't contain enough wipes for this job! I used up all the changing pads Disney provided and about a half a roll of toilet paper that they have hanging on the walls above the changing station. Now, here is the best part ...

I didn't bring a change of clothes!

Actually, I did, but they were in the car. So, I had this naked baby and a poopy outfit! I washed her up as best I could in the sink and then laid a bunch of paper towels on her stroller so she wouldn't get the residue poop back on herself. I then washed all of her clothes in the sink, and then scrubbed down the sink because I felt so bad for any guest who would have unknowingly came after me there to wash their hands. All my washing was useless. Her onesie was soaking wet, smelly and still stained. I just threw it in a plastic bag and gave up. I had washed the stained part of the back of her sweatshirt, but there was no way to dry it. The jeans were the same, wet and stained in the back. I put paper towels between her and the clothes, and then dressed her and made my way out of the park.

All I wanted to do was take her on a kiddie boat ride.

I took a look at her in her carseat, so content and happy, not knowing the drama she had caused me. I couldn't help but fall in love with her all over again as her smile melted away the nastiness of the day. I snapped this picture:
Less than 5 minutes later, she was asleep ...
I told Daniel all about it when he got home. I already bathed her as soon as I got home, but it was a quick industrial cleaning, not her usual, fun bath-time. I get in the shower and tell him to strip her so she can play in the bath. He does, and she decides to pee all over his chest and belly! Oh my gosh! So I hurry and wash her in her tub and then get out so Daniel can get in. He no sooner shuts the shower door and I hear him say, "BAAAABBBE! I need HELP!" I couldn't imagine what happened, then it hit me ... she finally pooped in the tub. I ran downstairs and grabbed a spatula thinking I would scoop it out and toss it in the toilet .. but NooOOOoo ..." it was mud again! And of course, she was having fun kicking and splashing until Daniel got her out ... which was less than 2 seconds. So here we were: me outside and Daniel and Sonora inside the shower and we were trying to scrub her and wash her all over again while he was holding her mid air since we weren't about to dump her tub water in the shower drain. She was, once more, slippery. We finally get her clean and I get her to the bed and of course, she spits up all over herself.

At this point, I just laugh as I get a warm washcloth and clean her up.
Somehow, some way, I got her to fall asleep.
They said it would happen ...

... Just wait till she poops all over the place! Poops in her tub ... spits up all over you ... pees on you ... throws a tantrum in public ...

Consider us initiated ~ in just one day!

We are now one of you.

One of the few,

the proud,

the parents.

Best Birthday Ever!

Yesterday I turned 44, and today marks one year to the day I found out I was pregnant! I remember not believing it and Daniel going back to the store to buy more tests! I remember wondering if the baby would live and being so scared. I remember being upset at all the money we spent for the adoption. I remember feeling like, "finally, something in my body worked right!" I remember praying that my baby wouldn't have downs syndrome. I remember wanting to wait to tell everyone, then not being able to hold it ... just like presents. I remember how excited everyone was for us. I remember me and Daniel just looking at each other and breaking out into full on laughter. I can't believe that a year ago, I was 6 weeks pregnant and I didn't even know it until 10:30 that night.
I wonder what the next whole year will bring my way ...
